Amate is a form of paper made in Mexico since prehistoric times, and it is made from the bark of trees.  The students viewed contemporary Mexican folk paintings on Amate paper.  Since we do not have access to authentic Amate paper, it was time to use our creative thinking skills!  We recycled brown paper bags and crumpled the paper to create a texture similar to bark.  The students used bright colored paints, indicative of the Mexican folk style, to create paintings showing the plants and animals native to the southern Illinois region.
